The Billboard Music Awards 2018 certainly didn’t disappoint, delivering one of the most hyped-up and talked about installments in recent memory. Kelly Clarkson oversaw the awards ceremony, hosting the show from the MGM Grand, Las Vegas, in spectacular style.
The night was jam-packed with performances from some of the biggest names in music. Including performances from; Taylor Swift, Travis Scott, Shawn Mendes and an awesome medley from Post Malone, 21 Savage and Aerosmith. The performances were great, but the night most definitely belonged to the winners.
It was an incredible night for Ed Sheeran who walked away with a total of six wins, including wins in the esteemed top artist and top male artist categories. He also delivered a highly praised live performance of “Galway Girl”, which got the feet tapping of everyone in attendance. Kendrick Lamar was the other big winner of the night, matching Sheeran with a total of six wins for the evening. Including big wins in the coveted top rap album and top rap artist categories, respectively.
It wasn’t just a night for the boys, Taylor Swift scooped two big awards; top female artist and a top-selling award for her latest album, Reputation, which has sold almost 5 million copies worldwide. Imagine Dragons had a great night, walking away with a total of 4 awards, including top group and top 100 artist.
The electro-dance double act, Chainsmokers, scored three wins. The duo performed a banging performance at the show and dedicated it to the late producer and EOM pioneer Avicii, who died earlier this year.
The Queen of Pop, Janet Jackson won the Icon award at this year’s show, a most deserving recipient, if the crowd reaction to her win was anything to go by She went on to deliver a poignant if understandably somber acceptance speech on the #metoo movement, for which she received a standing ovation from the sold-out crowd. This was most certainly her night and her performance of “Nasty” was a show stealer, which still has tongues wagging and hips shaking to this day.
Other wins from the night were picked up by Khalid, Camila Cabello, Drake, BTS, U2, Bruno Mars and Cardi B, to name just a few. It was a great night all round and one that will hard to top in 2019 when the Billboard Music Awards roll around once again. Expect to see a lot of new faces next year, as 2018 has been a fantastic year for album and single releases (we’re looking at you, Drake!), which will all become eligible for next years event.
